Can you help Anne-Marie?

Anne-Marie Zeeman is a researcher at the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC). Anne-Marie studies relapsing malaria (P. vivax type malaria). She successfully developed a single cell layer in vitro model to study compounds affecting dormant and active malaria parasites of rhesus monkeys. Active compounds need to be validated by in vivo testing, while these types of experiments may be largely avoided if a good 3D model is available. Can you help Anne-Marie develop a more organ-like rhesus 3D liver model in which she can study the dormancy and the waking up of malaria parasites?

Promising cross correlations
We believe that the cross correlation between in vitro rhesus and in vitro human models will provide the missing link required to improve the drug development process and aid transition. A more refined rhesus in vitro model can reduce the number of monkeys currently used for testing (antimalarial) drugs even more. The data from new 3D in vitro models could help validate and develop reliable human in vitro models, making testing on monkeys unnecessary detours.

Profile Helpathon #4
We are looking for people committed to fighting P. vivax malaria and especially people involved in the development of human in vitro liver models and infection models. But also people from outside this research area are very welcome to join us at this Helpathon. We are looking for a diverse group of people to help Anne-Marie further on her question. During this Helpathon you also are invited to help two other BPRC researchers in their development of in vitro models: Raissa is studying the brain in relation to aging and Frank is studying lungs in relation to a new Tuberculosis vaccination strategy.
