Can you Help Frank?
Frank Verreck does research on tuberculosis at the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC). Tuberculosis is the most deadly infectious disease worldwide! For the past hundred years, BCG (Bacillus Calmette Guérin) vaccinations take place through the skin. Research shows that macaques can be better protected from this infection by vaccination through their lungs. Frank really wants to further study the potential of this alternative vaccination strategie. He wants to understand how this BCG vaccination works in macaques lungs. Can you help Frank with integrating an immune system into a macaque lung organoid to address local immunity to tuberculosis with his vaccination strategy?

The time is right
Frank's research ambition reaches further than the use of laboratory animals allows. He believes an in vitro model could strongly support the BPRC research agenda: ‘I think the time is right to start thinking about in vitro modeling of lung immune complexity. I feel challenged to think beyond "the limitation of complexity": perhaps more is possible in vitro (on chip, in artificial organs) than I suspect. I think that an integrated approach to the challenge of the health issue with regard to tuberculosis and making laboratory animals superfluous can be seen as two sides of the same coin; a win-win situation, to which I like to devote my insights.’

Profile
For this Helpathon we are looking for people committed to fighting tuberculosis and especially people involved in the development of human in vitro lung models and infection models. But also people from outside this research area are very welcome to join us at this Helpathon. We are looking for a diverse group of people to help Frank further on his question. During this Helpathon you also are invited to help two other BPRC researchers in their development of in vitro models: Raissa is studying the brain in relation to aging and Anne-Marie is studying liver in relation to dormant malaria cells.
