Merel Merel Ritskes-Hoitinga and Pandora Pound ’s idea for an international Helpathon:

Study the concept of and habits behind research approach: why is there so much trust in animals as the gold standard model, even with so little scientific evidence to support this?

There is a huge belief/trust in animal studies being the 'gold standard' model for biomedical research (Pound and Ram 2020). In case one needs to know what a drug does in vivo, it is 'automatically' considered that an animal model is the best model to study a whole in vivo system and a better model than studying parts of the system. Also regulatory requirements from FDA and EMA require animal studies for safety testing, and have set them as the gold standard, even though there is a huge failure rate in the translational pipeline and the drug system will soon no longer be sustainable (DeLoitte and Touche 2017).

How can we broaden and open up this model discussion?

How can we prevent the 'automatic' routine of thinking that animal models are to be selected? How can we come to clear and multidisciplinary formulation of relevant research questions and then defining what research approach would be most optimal based on scientific evidence?

Participants: academics from various disciplines, industry, regulators, patients.
